WHO launches National Radon Database
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a National Radon Database on policies and regulations, as well as an updated Fact sheet on “Radon and health.” Over the past 18 months, the WHO has developed a survey to determine the current state of affairs on radon activities and regulations around the world. To date, it has received responses from 58 countries (including Canada), which are presented in the new database. Its announcement states the scientific evidence is now clear that radon, a radioactive gas, is responsible for a sizeable number of lung cancer cases worldwide. Based on this knowledge, over the past decade member states have implemented actions to manage this health risk in both dwellings and workplaces. Closer to home, the Saskatchewan government has confirmed to The Lung Association and the Take Action on Radon Coalition that its new Home Renovation Tax Credit includes radon mitigation. This is the first tax credit to cover radon mitigation in Canada. Homeowners can claim a 10.5 per cent tax credit on up to $20,000 of eligible home renovations. You can find out more on radon mitigation in Mechanical Business’s Jan/Feb 2021 article Keep Radon on Your Radar by Gord Cooke.

Parting Shot: Grizzlies get sky-high delivery
Georgian College in Barrie, ON decided to create an unforgettable experience for three students waiting anxiously to hear if they made it into the Electromechanical Engineering Technology − Mechatronics program this fall. It seemed only fitting to kick off their high-tech career by having personalized acceptance letters delivered by a drone right to their doorsteps. The happy “Air Grizzly” recipients were Marco D’Agnillo of Orillia, Ryan Little of Gilford, and Daniel Podgorny of Newmarket. Needless to say, innovation like this showcases the lighter side of social distancing.
