USask tackling COVID transmission in HVAC systems

As schools and workplaces reopen, ventilations systems are facing increased scrutiny. HVAC systems have become a critical area of focus in the ongoing battle against the pandemic.

Research being led by Carey Simonson at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is investigating whether the use of a barrier membrane in air exchangers can prevent viruses and other pathogens from contaminating fresh air. His is one of several groups that have received federal funding to research airborne virus transmission in ventilation systems.

Simonson is also working with colleague Jafar Soltan on testing the effectiveness and feasibility of using air sanitization devices to inactivate airborne pathogens in existing air conditioning systems. Will these options aid in the fight against COVID-19? Time, and research, will tell.

Parting Shot: Flush or treat?

Flush or treat? When the lease for Radiant Plumbing and Air Conditioning’s building was up, it was the end of a long and illustrious era. Since 2007, the Texas-based business had become famous for its weird and wonderful window displays showcasing toilets in all their glory, including special designs for Halloween, and several other times of the year. The displays often drew on current and classic pop culture trends and events. Movie and TV parodies have included "Harry Potty and the Deathly Bowels," "Game of Thrones," "The Clogging Dead," "The Flush," "Mary Poopins," and "Clogzilla." The final display was a Star Wars- inspired display. “We've loved our little effort to keep Austin weird,” said co-owner Brad Casebier. So, as October 31 approaches, we invite you to get inspired for some decorating of your own.
